Batavia 21 is a true rendering of the original formula. It is better by far than my very first blend as I’ve trimmed out all the unnecessary experimental components of my first go, so that this version is sleeker, bolder, with greater clarity in the overall composition. No citrus. No florals. No oudh in this version.
All ingredients are native to, or grown in Indonesia. Djakarta (the capital of Indonesia, on the island of Java) was once named Batavia, from the early 1600s by Dutch colonists. This perfume is not, in any way, a politically-charged, postcolonial treatise on relations between traditional Indonesian society and the impact of colonisation by the Dutch. It is merely a scented postcard of aromatic imaginings that may have been encountered by foreigners living in a vastly new and different landscape. A landscape bursting with spices, fecund with volcanic soil, persistent rainfall, intense humidity and lush tropical jungles.
